 Introductory Overview

The Recovery & Public Safety Certification reflects our commitment to advancing a workforce that is well-prepared to meet the complex needs of individuals, families, and communities at the intersection of recovery, harm reduction, and public health.

This certification evolves from the former Harm Reduction Specialist Certification, building on that strong foundation while expanding into a broader, more robust curriculum. It is grounded in federal direction and best practices, including the Executive Order on Harm Reduction and Overdose Prevention, the SAMHSA Harm Reduction Framework, and current national standards in behavioral health and public safety.

This comprehensive training is designed to:

  • Address recovery, prevention, harm reduction, and public health integration.
  • Align with national best practices and policy guidance to strengthen workforce readiness.
  • Equip professionals with the tools needed to balance recovery support, harm reduction strategies, and public health and safety priorities.

While harm reduction remains a vital cornerstone, the Recovery & Public Safety Certification expands beyond this foundation to provide:

  • Greater depth in content, preparing participants to respond to diverse and evolving challenges.
  • Expanded cross-system applications, integrating perspectives from healthcare, behavioral health, criminal justice, and community-based settings.
  • Practical strategies for building healthier, safer, and more resilient communities.

This certification represents a major step forward in strengthening the workforce that supports individuals impacted by substance use, mental health challenges, and justice involvement. Participants will leave prepared to foster collaboration, promote wellness, and lead efforts that protect both individual dignity and community safety.
